Is Your Caravan Fridge Losing Its Seal? Here’s What to Check

If you’ve ever arrived at your destination to find your caravan fridge door slightly open—even though you’re sure you latched or locked it—you’re not alone. It’s a surprisingly common issue, especially on longer or rougher trips. The good news is, it’s usually easy to prevent once you understand what’s going on.

What’s Causing the Problem?

In most cases, it comes down to two factors working together: extra weight in the fridge door and constant road vibration.

While you’re driving, your caravan is exposed to bumps, corners, and uneven surfaces. Inside the fridge, everything shifts with that movement. If the door shelves are loaded with heavier items like bottles, jars, or cans, that weight puts extra strain on the door.

Over time—or even during a single rough stretch of road—the added load can slightly pull the door out of alignment. This means the latch may not sit perfectly in place. Even if it’s technically engaged, vibration can momentarily relieve the pressure on the latch, allowing the door to creep open just a few millimetres.

It might not sound like much, but even a small gap is enough to break the seal, let warm air in, and reduce the fridge’s cooling performance.

How to Fix It

1. Lighten the load on the door
This is the simplest and most effective solution. Try to avoid storing heavy items in the door while travelling. Instead, place bottles, cans, and liquids on the main shelves where they’re better supported. Use the door compartments for lighter items only.

2. Add a travel latch or strap
If rearranging isn’t practical, installing a travel latch or securing strap is a reliable fix. These are designed to keep the door firmly closed, regardless of vibration or weight. They’re widely used in caravans and motorhomes for exactly this reason and can save you from repeat issues.

Don’t Forget the Door Seal

Your fridge relies on a magnetic gasket to maintain a tight seal. Keeping it in good condition helps prevent warm air from getting in and ensures your fridge runs efficiently.

  • Clean it regularly – Use mild detergent and water to remove dirt and residue. Avoid harsh chemicals, as they can dry out the rubber.
  • Keep it flexible – If the fridge isn’t used for a while, apply a light layer of silicone grease or rubber conditioner to prevent cracking.
  • Avoid excess weight – Even when parked, heavy items in the door can affect how well the seal holds.

A Simple Habit That Makes a Big Difference

A quick check before you hit the road—making sure the door isn’t overloaded and is properly secured—can save you from spoiled food and a fridge working harder than it needs to.

A little awareness and maintenance go a long way in keeping your caravan fridge performing as it should, wherever the road takes you.
