Choosing a Gas Califont for Pumped Water Systems
If you’re using a pump (common in off-grid or tank setups), it’s important to match your water supply correctly to ensure smooth and reliable performance.
✔ Recommended Setup
We offer a range of suitable water pumps (12V, 24V, and AC) designed to work well with our Challenger gas califonts:
- Flow rate: 10–17L/min
- Pressure: 30–43 psi
This sits within the optimal operating range, helping ensure consistent ignition and stable hot water.
⚠ What to Watch Out For
1. Incorrect Pressure or Flow
- Too low → heater may not ignite
- Too high → can cause instability or wear
- Ideal range: 20–65 psi
👉 Not sure about your flow rate? Try the bucket test:
- Use a bucket with known volume (e.g. 10L)
- Turn on the tap fully (cold side only)
- Time how long it takes to fill
Guide:
- 10L in 60 seconds = 10L/min
- 10L in 40 seconds = 15L/min
- 10L in 30 seconds = 20L/min
This gives a quick and reliable indication of whether your system is suitable.
2. Shower Mixers & Low-Flow Shower Heads
- Can restrict flow through the califont
- May cause pulsing (hot–cold fluctuations)
- Common with “high-pressure” or water-saving shower heads
3. Oversized Pumps
- Powerful pumps can cause pressure spikes and cycling
- Solution: install a pressure controller or flow restriction valve

For best performance, consider adding a pressure tank (accumulator) after the pump:
- Smooths water flow
- Reduces pump cycling
- Helps prevent pulsing
